MCPS Performing Arts Academy

The Performing Arts Academy program uses the performing arts to assist students in grades 3 through 12 in reading, writing, oral presentations, and college and career readiness. The program will help to transform our community and our world by teaching a generation of self-assured students, to understand the value of community service, and value our individual differences. Our curriculum follows or aligns with state standards for music, theater, and arts education. We place a high value on the student experience, which involves engaging students in conversation about our core values of Curriculum, Character, and Community.

PAA Work-Based Learning

MCPS Performing Arts Academy offers high school students a unique work-based learning opportunity, focusing on various aspects of performing arts production. Students can gain hands-on experience in lighting design and set building, allowing them to apply classroom knowledge to real-world scenarios.

In collaboration with Patrick & Henry Community College, the academy provides on-the-job training and execution through its production program. This partnership enriches students' learning experiences by combining academic instruction with practical application in professional settings.

Key Features:

  • Lighting Design: Students learn the technical and artistic aspects of lighting design, including equipment handling, scene setting, and creating mood and atmosphere for performances.

  • Set Building: Participants engage in the construction and design of sets, developing skills in carpentry, painting, and stage layout.

  • Partnership with Patrick & Henry Community College: The collaboration offers enhanced educational resources and real-world training, preparing students for future careers in performing arts and production.
